The clamshell is probably the most common VHS case worldwide (although it did not catch on in the US like it did elsewhere). The beauty of the clamshell is that it combined size, protection, and ease into one package. All a distributor had to do was buy a bunch of these cases in bulk and have tons of paper sleeves printed at the printer (which was much cheaper than having cardboard printed, cut, and glued). Clamshells came in a variety of forms, including soft clams (Disney), hard clams (Thorn EMI), and encased artwork clams (Unicorn).
