Anime Disguised as Cartoons

So I've been doing a little research project on anime relesed in the US disgised as cartoons. And when I say a little, I mean 20 hours worth of rersearch. It turns out that there was a large amount of anime released in the US. These were released dubbed, cut, and with the characters names changed. They were often released with a cover that did not reflect the animation style, making them appear to be cartoons. I have compiled a list of every anime (that I could locate and identify) that was ever released disguised as acartoon or before AnimEigo's 1989 release of Madox-01. Of  particular interest are the tapes by FHE, all of which are big boxes and rare to the point that all I was able to find for some was a Worldcat entry. I have purposely not inluded things like The Last Unicorn and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors that were animated in Japan, but were written and storyborded elsewhere. Almost none of these made the jump to DVD.

I have wanted a copy of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table series for years. Hope you find those and many others face to face someday. Good luck!

Yeah, those King Arthur tapes go for $50-60 if they're not cut boxes, if you can even find them.

Great research!  I actually have a couple of copies of Swan Lake on Amazon right now, its quite different than the ballet, and good in my opinion.

I believe the Tom Sawyer anime was what they based the Nintendo game off of.  I always thought it was a weird game as it is nothing compared to Mark Twain's work.

I have quite a few of these. Some corrections to your list:

Samurai Pizza Cats: The Movie was a Video Treasures release, but it was post-1989.

The Little Mermaid on Starmaker is probably the same as Video Gems, the 1975 Toei film.

One you missed is Jack and the Beanstalk on Magic Window.

@Chandler0201 Do you perhaps know if the versions of Swan Lake from MEDIA, Hi-tops and Orion are the same anime? I had a hard time finding anything on that one. The only reason I even know about it at all is because of a sold listing on Etsy.

@mrbassman777: It is, the 1981 Toei film. It's the only anime Swan Lake with an English dub I know of.

@chandler0201: It actually wasn't. The designs look nothing like the anime. For whatever reason Square thought there ought to be a Tom Sawyer RPG.

I actually knew about the Jack and the Beanstalk tape, but I didn't recognize the studio on the back of the box and assumed it was a cartoon. Looked it up on IMDB, and sure enough, It's an anime. The Little Mermaid (Video Gems, Hi-tops, Readers Digest/ Just For Kids, Starmaker) was released a bunch of times, however, there are two different anime called that that, one a film from 1975 and the other a tv show from 1991 called The Adventures of the Little Mermaid. It was released by Fox Kids and Saban's own label in several volumes. It took me forever to figure out that they weren't the same. Thanks for the info  on Jack and the Beanstalk, I wouldn't have ever figured that one out.

Oh just remembered a couple I forgot

1. Ox Tales, Just for Kids

2. Alibaba's Revenge

3.Alakazam tbe Great, HBO

4.Battle for Moon Station Dallos, Just for Kids

5.Gimm's Fairy Tales (lot of volumes)

6.The High Flying Adventures of Peter Pan, Video Treasures

7. In the Begining (lot of volumes)

8. Speed Racer

9. Nobody's Boy (Remi)

10. Serendipity the Pink Dragon, just for kids

11. Little Women: Jo's Boyfriend (not %100 sure this exists)

12.The Adventures of Pinocchio (various volumes)

13. Heidi, Pacific Arts

14. There may have been volumes of Fables of the Green Forest released even before FHE and MEDIA picked them up, released by a company called AIMS Media. There is ony one tape in the database by this company, which seemed to specialize in "don't do drugs" type educational videos. There is actually a single volume of this on Ebay right now, but I found an article and some Worldcat entries indicating that there were several more.
