Never let the truth ruin a good story.

Jonathan Fisher (Christopher Reeve) is a newspaper reporter who becomes a celebrity when he writes a fictitious exposé on prostitution. The story of the high-living pimp is too close a resemblance to real-life flesh pedlar Fast Black (Morgan Freeman), and Jonathan is jailed when he refuses to turn his papers over to the local district attorney. In jail for suspicion of murder, Black tries to silence the reporter who created the sensational fabrication. ~

Magazine reporter Jonathan Fisher (Christopher Reeve), in danger of losing his job, promises to write a hard-hitting story on prostitution. When no one on the street will talk to him, he fabricates a story of a pimp that's so well-received it puts his career back on track. But Police and a district attorney think the story is of a real-life pimp who is wanted for murder and start pressuring him to reveal the identity of the subject of his story. Fast Black (Morgan Freeman), the pimp and police suspect, also thinks the story is about himself, and wants to know what Jonathan knows, and who told him. From there a battle of wits and wills ensues between Jonathan and Fast Black, in addition to Jonathan becoming involved with one of the pimp's call girls, Punchy (Kathy Baker).

A journalist in desparate need of a hot story, makes one up about a New York street pimp. Subsequently the toast of the town, he learns that his fictional character fits the description of an actual pimp who is accused of murder. The journalist gets pulled into the pimp's world while being pressured by the legal authorities to divulge what he knows about the pimp--specifically, where he was the night of the murder.
