He gave his body to save their souls.

When you have a fiancée, a lover and you have to lead 25 women of the night down the path of righteousness.; you must pray for more than guidance, you must pray for strength.

Michael Palin wrote and stars in this comedy as The Reverend Charles Fortescue, an unassuming missionary called back to England after spending ten years in Africa teaching children in a native village. Upon arriving in London, he finds that his new assignment is to take charge of a slum mission for prostitutes. He obtains money for the running of the mission from a wealthy woman, Lady Ames (Maggie Smith), whom he meets on the boat sailing to England from Africa. Lady Ames guarantees Fortescue the money on the condition that he take it upon himself to add a little spice to her dormant sex life.

Palin stars as the Rev. Charles Fortescue a missionary returning from Africa after a ten year religious mission. He is to wed his sweetheart who refuses to be touched. Denholm Elliott as The Bishop of London gives him a new job to "minister" to the women of the night who frequent the East End. Maggie Smith plays Lady Ames who funds the new assignment, but only on the condition that Reverend Fortescue share her bed. Fortescue then has numerous escapades and sex-scapades as he blunders his way through the back street of the capital. Eventually his lifestyle results in him being defrocked by the Church on charges of immorality.
