The Mountain Men (1980)

Additional Information

Additional Information
Written by Fraser Clarke Heston, son of Charlton, THE MOUNTAIN MEN is a mindless, bloody pseudo-western purporting to show the last days of the fur-trapping era. The film opens as an Indian woman, Racimo, runs away from her brutal husband, Macht, who dispatches an army of warriors to bring her back. On the run she meets two grizzled old trappers, Charlton Heston, and foul-mouthed Keith. Though the elder Heston and Keith seem to have fun with their roles (and the editing by Eva Ruggiero is fine), you get the feeling that THE MOUNTAIN MEN is a home movie shot for laughs while the Hestons were vacationing in a national park. Shot on locations in the Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Shoshone National Forest, the film looks gorgeous, but the annoying screenplay and excessive gore distract from the beauty. For a really good vanishing-breed movie, see LONELY ARE THE BRAVE (1962).
