Platinum Disc

History / Information

Believe it or not, despite being called Platinum Disc, and being synonymous with bargain bin DVDs, Platinum also had a VHS releasing offshoot where they released some of their titles on VHS, but not all of them. They aren't as common as their DVDs, though.

Donna Michelle Productions

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 13:22
History / Information
Donna Michele (or Michelle?) Productions was an extremely scarce independent company that operated in the late 80's. They found new films for their line by advertising in the back of video magazines. These ads attracted schlock filmmakers looking to cash in on their home-made zero budget movie. The films were released into slipcases with crudely drawn artwork. Their most successful release was Cannibal Campout, likely due to the graphic artwork. John McBride returned to Donna Michele with a second feature, Woodchipper Massacre. I couldn't really tell you any information on the company, since its hard to find any. There seems to once have been a popular Playboy model by the name "Donna Michelle" but I doubt any connection between the two.. They've only had 7 releases. Attack of the Killer Refrigerator, Cannibal Campout, Monsters and Maniacs, Rock and Roll Mobster Girls, Woodchipper Massacre, Splatter Farm, and the Abomination. Their most scarce releases are Rock and Roll Mobster Girls and Monsters and Maniacs.

Wizard Video

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 05:14
History / Information

Created by Charles Band, the founder of VHS giant Media Home Entertainment, the company began around 1981 and distributed a wide variety of cult films. These including many Italian horror classics and sex comedies, but they're most successful releases were those licensed from New Line Cinema. Several of these titles included the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos. Immediately after its success with it's new lineup (Most of that success is attributed to TCM), Band thought he could turn an extra profit by taking advantage of the popularity of the Atari System. He released two Atari games, Halloween, and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The games were widely criticized for their violence and would find little profit, as they were hidden behind store counters. Projects for future games such as Flesh Gordon were halted.

Around 1984, they began to release their movie titles in the big box format, about the same time Continental Video began doing it. With the success of the new display box, they would go back into their archives and redistribute films they had previously released in the slipcase into the new big boxes. Films such as "I Spit on Your Grave" and "The Boogey Man" were given the big box treatment. Other films such as "The Harrad Experiment" and "Astro Zombies" were even renamed specifically for their new releases.

Wizard Video began to decline around 1986, when the quality of their big boxes diminished (as with Dreamaniac and Headless Eyes). They would eventually fall back to their roots by distributing in slipcases as with Psychos in Love, Mutant Hunt, and Robot Holocaust. Wizard Video wouldn't resurface until it took a stab at the new digital age with a DVD release of Skinned Alive, and then several years later, the Intruder.

Their trademarks are their provocative artwork and big box releases. Each Wizard Video release has a unique catalog number on it's spine. Although their most common format was VHS, they would dabble in others. They had released titles across 5 formats: VHS, Beta, CED, laserdisc and Atari Games. Wizard was also associated with Cult Video and Force Video.

In 2013, Charles Band re-releases the popular horror big boxes with the pretense that they're the original unused boxes. Videos online have since debunked this.

Description
They started in 1984, I'm pretty sure with Tilt (#1001), some movie about Brooke Shields playing pinball. I've never seen a #1000 anywhere, but I know that in some promo stuff, a kit that was a few copies of a few movies in a display thingie like they'd have up at video store check-outs had their own catalog numbers. They had an easy to understand numbering system, just going up a number with each subsequent release.
It was the same with their "distributed by" releases - Comet Video #2000+, Cinema Kid #3000+, VCL #4000+, Summit International #5000+, Virgin Video #6000+, Norstar 7000+, etc. "Continental Video`" became "Continental Video - a division of Cinema Group" sometime in 1985, I think with Desperate Living (#1051). They went from big boxes to slipcases with Born American (#1085) sometime in 1986. They switched over to "Cinema Group Home Video" sometime in 1987 with Starship (#1100). But I've seen promo posters/memorabilia with Starship where it's touted to be from Continental but I've never seen any actual tapes marked like that. CGHV re-released a lot of the Continental releases using the old catalog numbers, but their new releases didn't follow the simple numbering habits. And a few of their child labels changed names at some point. I don't know about the real company ownership details, but CGHV kind of morphed into "New Star Video" and "Palisades Entertainment." A few of the movies were eventually released as small box "Magnum Entertainment" releases.

They either had some kind of ties with "21st Century Distribution Corp" (usually cheap horror/trash/grindhouse movies) or just bought a big lot of their movies to release. "Planet Video" must've done the same thing since Continental re-released a lot (but not all) Planet titles. They gave some of them new names.

In turn, I believe Planet Video was the home video division of 21st Century Distribution.

Yes, Planet was 21st Century's label. After it folded they started licensing titles to Continental.

Embassy Home Entertainment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 14:20
History / Information
In 1982, television producer Norman Lear and his partner Jerry Perenchio bought the studio for $25 million[3], dropping off the name "Avco" and changed the name of their own TV company T.A.T. Communications to Embassy Television. The company was already producing such network hits as The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time, Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life; during this period they launched Silver Spoons, Square Pegs, and Who's the Boss?. In 1983 it set up its own home video division, prior releases from its film catalog had been handled through Magnetic Video. In 1984, Embassy Pictures was renamed to Embassy Films Associates. In 1985, Norman Lear and Jerry Perenchio sold Embassy to The Coca-Cola Company, which also owned Columbia Pictures at the time. Coca-Cola kept Embassy's television division alive; under Coke's ownership the hit series 227 and Married... with Children began. Embassy Television was renamed Embassy Communications in 1986, then ELP (Embassy Limited Partnership) Communications in 1988. Coca-Cola sold the theatrical division to Dino De Laurentiis, who folded the company into De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, and the home video division to another entity known as Nelson Entertainment, run by Barry Spikings. Nelson Entertainment was the American subsidiary owned by Nelson Holdings International (NHI), a company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embassy_Pictures)
